TALLAHASSEE AREA

Florida's capital city embodies a unique juxtaposition of carefree college life and politically charged action. But you don't have to be a co-ed or congress member to appreciate the city's Southern charm and down-home hospitality.

Here are some great pre- and post-meeting ideas to share with your attendees

  • Take a trip back in time at the Indian council house and Spanish mission at Mission San Luis, the archaeologically significant mounds at Lake Jackson, or the antebellum splendor of Goodwood Plantation.

  • Families will enjoy playing together in the hands-on kids' area at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, seeing the exotic animals at the outdoor Tallahassee Museum, and staring up, up, up at the giant mastodon skeleton at the Museum of Florida History.

  • Scour small town Havana's quaint antiques shops for treasures or buy a creation from a local artist in nearby Quincy.

  • Swim or snorkel in the 72-degree waters of Wakulla Springs or join a glass-bottom boat ride here to learn a little area history and do some wildlife watching.

  • Join the throng of college students partying along "The Strip," a.k.a. Tennessee Street, a collection of casual bars proffering cheap beer, live music, and friendly games of darts and pool.

  • Dine in style at one of Tallahassee's gourmet restaurants, from the ever-changing menu at Food Glorious Food, to the funky atmosphere of Kool Beanz, to the haute cuisine of Cypress.

  • Marvel at the thousands of azaleas in bloom each spring at Alfred B. Maclay State Gardens and the masses of monarch butterflies that migrate to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in late October.

  • Cheer on the home teams, the FSU Seminoles and FAMU Rattlers, in football, basketball, baseball, and other sports that keep the stadiums and sports centers filled year 'round. Don't miss FAMU's famous "Marching '100'" marching band in action.
